Jessica Auer: Looking North

Working mainly with large format photography, Jessica Auer is known for her tableau-style photographs that examine how landscapes have been preserved, altered or commodified for sightseeing. Through this work, she has looked at the vulnerability of remote sites and communities when confronted with mass tourism. In her lecture, she will discuss her recent work made in Iceland, and the making-of her documentary film titled Shore Power. Topics include the geo-political realities surrounding travel and the paradox of attempting to preserve the same landscapes that the industry often seeks to exploit.

Jessica Auer is a photographer, filmmaker and educator who works between Montréal, Canada and Seydisfjördur, Iceland. Jessica has been teaching photography in Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University for over 15 years. In 2016, she founded Ströndin Studio, a photographic research facility and educational institution in East Iceland. Recent exhibitions include The National Museum of Iceland in Reykjavík and the Mulhouse Photography Biennale in France.
