UKS (Unge Kunstneres Samfund / Young Artists’ Society) is a Norwegian membership organization for artists and an Oslo-based institution for contemporary art.

On Tuesday 20 November from 5pm, UKS Director, Rhea Dall, and UKS Chair, Ruben Steinum, will discuss the main rationales and objectives of UKS—thinking about how UKS works for young artists, why it is important to organize, and, hence, why become a member of UKS?

Dall and Steinum will talk about UKS’ recent political work—how UKS has secured funding for an ambitious artist housing draft proposal and Norsk Kulturråd subsidies for artist-run spaces (“Arrangørstøtteordningen”) and artists’ assistants (“Kunstnerassistentordningen”). Pondering the objective of having both an artistic and political impact within and beyond Norway, Dall and Steinum will further talk about UKS’ exhibition program and its upcoming 100-year anniversary.

This event—that is part of the Monday Lecture series at the Art Academy in Bergen—follows UKS’ recent talks in Stavanger (Rogaland Kunstsenter), Trondheim (RAKE/Coast Contemporary), and Lofoten (Nordland kunst- og filmfagskole). UKS’ traveling talks makes it easier for artists as well as art students to be in touch with UKS, creating a core feedback loop to impact and improve UKS’ future agenda!

//// UKS ////

Founded by artists for artists in 1921, UKS (Unge Kunstneres Samfund / Young Artists’ Society) has since established itself as one of Norway’s core experimental venues for the arts and its advocates; convening, exhibiting, and supporting critical voices of contemporary artists. While its political initiatives operate nation-wide and its seven board members, all active artists, come from across the country, UKS’ headquarters is today situated in St. Olavs gate in central Oslo.

Ruben Steinum (b. 1984, NO) is a Norwegian visual artist and Chair of UKS, board member of Norwegian Visual Artists (NBK), and co-founder of the art sales platform Atelier. Steinum is a graduate from the Norwegian Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo and is based on Nesodden, Oslo.

Rhea Dall (b. 1980, DK) is a Danish curator, critic, and the Director of UKS. Dall was one of the Artistic Directors of Bergen Assembly 2016 and in 2013 she co-founded PRAXES Center for Contemporary Art, a non-profit institution for international art and research situated in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Dall has previously held positions at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, at the Berlin Biennale’s 6th and 5th editions, and at the Danish & Nordic Pavilions in Venice 2009.
