EVERY SURFACE IS A CANVAS

Venue: Joy Forum, Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, UiB. Møllendalsveien 61, 5009 Bergen.

Time: 30 November-20 December 2020.

'EVERY SURFACE IS A CANVAS' is an art project by two graffiti painters who have been invited to use the Joy Forum's architecture to express themselves artistically and to address the surrounding public.

When architecturally planning for KMD’s building in Møllendalsveien, Snøhetta became inspired of the students at the Academy of Fine Art who used walls and other surfaces in its old building for aesthetic and occasionally political expressions. Often in the form of small drawings, graffiti, posters, stickers, pictures etc. This formed the backdrop for the slogan "every interior surface is a canvas", which was used in a description of the building in an article in 2017 about the building and Snøhetta.

As a nod to how the architects envisioned the continuation of this visual culture in the new building, we have looked at how this has manifested itself today. A study that also makes it clear that there‘s a fine line between setting clear framework conditions for the arts and stripping it of its autonomy.
