Textiles have accompanied human beings for millennia, making them one of the most important bearers of cultural memory. The multiplicity of meanings ascribed to textiles and diversity of roles they serve in our culture (e.g. the symbolism of clothing, religious and social connotations, the color scheme of traditional functional cloth) means that on many levels textiles tell us a story of transformations in the contemporary world. What kind of story is this? Or more precisely: What stories interweave with one another, from the threads of tradition, artistic practice, and theory? In the Interweaving Structures project, we will be seeking answers to these questions from three art research angles, each of which based on different methodologies and strategies of working with textiles as a medium of contemporary artistic practice.
