Through her collaborative projects, Lewandowska has for many years explored the public function of archives, collections and exhibitions in an age characterised by relentless privatisation. ‘Museum Futures. Distributed‘ (32 min) made by Marysia Lewandowska and Neil Cummings as part of the 50 years Jubilee of Moderna Museet, explores contemporary art practice and its institutions by re-imagining the role of artists, museums, galleries, markets, and academies in the world dominated by a shrinking public sphere. Set in 2058 the film treats the future as the past, introducing elements of a sci-fi utopia.

After the film screening Marysia Lewandowska will discuss issues of ownership in relation to art museums and a wider culture. Speaking from a copyleft position she will consider non-proprietary contracts and creative commons licenses as important instruments creating the culture of acknowledgement and generosity.

The film will be introduced by Curator Randi Grov Berger (Entrée), and Associate Professor Anne Szefer Karlsen (Curatorial Practice, Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, UiB).

‘Art Museums of the Future’ is a collaboration between Curator Randi Grov Berger (Entrée), Associate Professor Anne Szefer Karlsen (Curatorial Practice, Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, UiB) and Project Developer Åse Løvgren (VISP – Produksjonsenhet for visuell kunst).

Marysia Lewandowska is a Polish-born London-based artist. Research plays a central role in her practice, often resulting in public art projects, publications, films and installation works, commissioned, exhibited and collected across public institutions in Europe at Tate Modern (UK), Moderna Museet (SE), Muzeum Sztuki (PL), New Museum (USA) and more recently in China at Osage Gallery, Shanghai and K11 Chi Art Space, Hong Kong. She was a Professor of Art in the Public Realm at Konstfack in Stockholm 2003-2013, where she established ‘Timeline: Artists’ Film and Video Archive‘. Between 2014-16 she was based in Hong Kong undertaking a Visiting Professorship at the Chinese University and as Artist in Residence at the Asia Art Archive.
