Children spend much of the school day sitting, yet the furniture they use is rarely designed to accommodate their natural need for movement. The project explores how furniture design can help create a more play­ based learning environment that supports children’s physical needs. Furniture design can encourage play and movement, but also hinder it, as traditional chairs lock the body in a static position.

The project aims to view the child in the present, not merely as a future adult. It challenges a school culture dominated by performance metrics that value learning for its utility rather than for immediate well­being.

In response, I have developed sculptural furniture that encourages movement and play, while also serving for activities such as writing and drawing. They give the body the freedom to vary its seating position as needed. I hope the project can contribute to a conver­ sation about how we design the physical environment of schools and the values that shape our design for children.
