A COLLABORATIVE WORK BETWEEN MARGRETHE LANGE AND NETE SCHEUER // What can we say about the archive? It has been growing for the past three years. It contains a mix of images, texts, handwritten notes, protest signs, plant material, screenshots, text messages, banners, emails and more. It covers student protest and activism carried out in solidarity with Palestinians, to speak up against a genocide. It also covers how that work was met by the art institution KMD under the university UiB. And why did we choose to let a board game swallow the archive? This project is an attempt to work against the resetting of the institution. A conversation we have had over and over and over again during our time at KMD is how to make anything last when everything is smooth white surfaces and booking systems that reserve spaces a week or a day or an hour at a time. How do you make anything last and how do you pass on the knowledge and experience you have gathered? The infrastructure of the institution, the visible and invisible becomes obvious through all the ways it fails. That is why the board game is built around a system of access; you gain access or lose access, because it was taken from you, because it was never given to you, because it overlooked you or wanted to keep you out or shut you down. The way the institution functions is reflected in its architecture; the shell that holds the hierarchy of power where the students are at the bottom when separated and at the top when united.
