This project explores how assistive devices can be more naturally integrated into the home by combining aesthetics and functionality. The goal is to design assistive devices that feel like a natural part of the home, rather than something to hide away. The need for assistive devices can arise suddenly, due to disabilities, illness, aging, or accidents.
Many current assistive devices are designed primarily for functionality, but they often don’t fit well into the home. They are associated with hospitals or care homes, rather than being objects we would want in our own homes. Assistive devices should be something people can take pride in, regardless of age or ability.
By combining aesthetics and functionality, assistive devices can become a natural part of the home, rather than visible symbols of need. This is especially important considering the aging population and the desire to age in place. When design addresses both practical needs and visual qualities, assistive devices provide both security and dignity, while preserving the home’s personal character.
The result is a collection of furniture with dual functions: both as assistive devices and regular furniture. This makes the home practical and aesthetic ally pleasing while reducing the stigma around using assistive devices.
