Namata Birungi Maria.T is an Ugandan conceptual, multidisciplinary artist . Primarily a sculptress, key themes her work addresses include the politics of food and scarcity, absence, presence, labour. For the group show Í could only see the back of it`, I am showing an installation of the mycelium made from using light-weight fiber-based materials cardboard, raffia and cotton wool ,that exist in a state of transformation-pressed fiber, sculpted light and the spaces in between. I am referencing the ´Kabaala´ mushroom which is sacred, and essential for rituals – while also creating the most communal meals. It holds the memory of something shared, something devoured, questioning what remains after the harvest.
