Concerts at the Grieg Academy April 2024

Unless otherwise stated, admission is free and the concerts take place in Gunnar Sævig’s Hall at the Grieg Academy.

Concert entrance: Nina Griegsgate 6, directly across from Grieghallen.

 

Spring is coming and the students at the Grieg Academy have built up an impressive programme to show. New works have been rehearsed throughout the winter and are ready to be tested on audiences and then perhaps they end up as exam repertoire? You are invited to listen!

Thursday 4th April at 18.30: UPB Kammermusikkfestival I
Unge Pianister i Bergen (UPB) is an association of - young pianists in Bergen. Most of them study at the Grieg Academy, or have done so. Now UPB invites you to 3 days of chamber music, where the pianists play together with their fellow students - and in some cases with each other. This evening we will hear music by Robert Schumann and Edvard Grieg.

Fiday 5th April at 18.30: UPB Kammermusikkfestival II
The festival organized by UPB continues. Tonight, Schubert, Brahms, Debussy, Poulenc and Rodrigo are on the program in works for piano (without exceptions) in concert with singing, clarinet, cello, oboe and guitar.

Saturday 6th April at 18.30: UPB Kammermusikkfestival III
On the third and last day of the UPB Chamber Music Festival, we will hear music by Alessandro Scarlatti, Joseph Haydn, Edvard Grieg and Fartein Valen: Trio for song, trumpet and piano, trio for violin, cello and piano, songs with piano accompaniment and a sonata for violin and – piano.

Sunday 7th April at 20.00 in Nykirken: Sergej Tchirkov, accordion
The Grieg Academy's PhD candidate Sergej Tchirkov performs the Swiss composer Alfred Zimmerlin's work "Akkordeonbuch", which was created in close collaboration between composer and performer. Read more on KMDs website

Friday 12th April at 19.30: Diana Galakhova, hammer piano
The Grieg Academy's PhD Candidate Diana Galakhova specializes in the hammer piano, which is a forerunner of the modern piano. At this concert, she plays a Hafner instrument from 1830. The music performed is by Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828): A sonata, a fantasy for four-handed piano (with Irina Tarasova) and the song "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen" with soprano Hilde Haraldsen Sveen and clarinetist Christian Stene.

Saturday 13th April at 19.00: Sip, paint and listen
Draw the music you hear, or sit back and enjoy the music played by students at the Grieg Academy. Water, tea and coffee will be served.
Organized by The Grand Spring Exhibition.

Sunday 14th April at 18.00: Kari Knutsen, violin & Kateryna Persysta, piano
Two of the Grieg Academy's master's students perform parts of their exam program: "Five pieces for piano" by Jean Sibelius, "Adventure Suite" for solo violin by Bjarne Brustad as well as works by Mendelssohn and Grieg.

Thursday 18th April at 12.30: Spring concert with the jazz vocalists at the Grieg Academy
Led by their teacher Lina Nyberg, the Grieg Academy's jazz vocal students invite to a lunchtime concert. With: Aurora Barstad Andresen, Selma Aurelia Holth, Trygve Tronstad, Johanne Maria Foldøy, Sigrid Undheim Lygren and Martin Halla (all vocals) - plus probably a few more fellow students.

Thursday 18th April at 18.00 at Bergen public library: House concert with the singing class
Under the motto "Protect your favourites", the singing class at the Grieg Academy serves a spring exam menu with Rossini, J. Strauss, Humperdinck, Schubert, C. Elling, R Strauss (and possibly a Mozart ball), accompanied by Signe Bakke and Turid Bakke Braut.

Thursday 18th April at 19.00: Clarinet class concert
Clarinet students and pupils from both the Grieg Academy and GUT (Griegacademy's Young Talents) contribute to this concert, accompanied by Knut-Christian Jansson and Tor Erik Seime Pettersen. Works by i.a. Rossini, Weber, Mozart, Schumann, Poulenc and Carl Nielsen are on the programme.

Friday 19th April at 19.00: Christian Stene, clarinet - concert and project presentation
PhD Candidate and clarinetist Christian Stene presents preliminary artistic results and status of his reflections in connection with his scholarship project "(Re)Phrasing - shaping music with modern instruments". With: Tor Erik Seime Pettersen (piano), Hilde Haraldsens Sveen (soprano) and Diana Galakhova (hammer piano).

Saturday 20th April at 17.00: Visual music
Musicians play while paintings are shown on the big screen. Through this concert, we experience the music's visual changes.
Organized by The Grand Spring Exhibition.

Sunday 21th April at 14.00: Yoga
Do you need a break from the hectic everyday life? Join us for yoga in Gunnar Sævig's hall. Meditative and calm music is played. Borrow a yoga mat, or bring your own!

Saturday 27 April at 15.00 in St. Markus Church: Afternoon Tea concert
Professor Signe Bakke's piano students play works by e.g. Ludwig van Beethoven and Edvard Grieg. With: Luca-Kristina Solheim, Elena Dikić, Øyvind Bjørkum, Szilard Simon Pal, Marina Matsuoka (all piano), with guest appearances by Sergio Llorente (violin) and Una Kristjansdottir (vocals).
