Next generation

How can visual communication enlighten the next generation and create more mutual respect in gender relations, in order to prevent sexual harassment from happening in the future?

My master project is the design of educational material for people between 12 and 18 years old. The design explores and applies critical methodology in order to enlighten the adolescents about mutual respect between the sexes, in order to prevent and avoid sexual harassment in the future, through visual communication with storytelling and candy design.

What problem have you wanted to work with?

In recent decades, more and more people have started paying attention to sexual harassment, which is a complex and controversial topic around the world due to its background, reasons, series of social feedback regarding the power structure of gender, and feminism. According to researched materials, the hypothesis is that sexual harassment happens because of misunderstanding of intimacy within the patriarchy social structure. My master project aims to explore and apply critical methodology to visualization in storytelling and candy design as educational materials designed to enlighten Chinese adolescents about mutual respect among sexes, in order to prevent and avoid sexual harassment in the future.

What was the result?

I employ to instrumentally analyze causes behind sexual harassment. Specifically, one part of the research is based on the theory that food is a gateway to intimacy, especially candies and sugar. As we all know, candy is a favorite thing for kids. Furthermore, these findings helped me build a logical connection, in light of biochemistry, between sugar and intimacy that I can highlight through my master project. Meanwhile, my design project engages adolescents by integrating visual narrative with interactive design, in order to create an interactive storytelling experience that can not only convey the research findings to adolescents, but also give them an opportunity to practice respect and share the acquired respectful attitude among the sexes.

Who will especially benefit from your project?

To explore the broader relationship between education and Chinese traditions, I paid more attention to traditional Chinese patterns, especially the dragon pattern. Precisely, my master project aimed to distribute the concept of sharing within Chinese teenager in order to promote the concept of equality between the sexes. In old dynasty, a woman was an object or accessory, especially within the rights system. For example, Chinese emperors were male except Wu Zetian who is a woman, and emperors had numerous concubines. Even if the concubine was dead, the emperor was indifferent. In my master project, I selected ‘ 双龙戏珠 ’ (Pinyin: shuáng lóng xì zhū ) as my critical pattern, and it is an auspicious and festive decorative pattern, mostly used for architectural paintings and noble and luxurious utensils. Therefore, I want to explore and create a friendly evironment between the sexs in my master project as a present to the next generation by understanding the traditional Chinese cultures.
