Bio

You have a thought, an interest, a need to explore. Something. Maybe it’s a memory, or something imagined. You’re told stories, other people’s memories, you’re shown pictures and texts written a long time ago. Sometimes it starts with a photograph, that’s the easiest. You might print out your reference, you might make a grid to sketch it out on the wood you’re preparing to carve into. Or maybe you’ll transfer it with a projector or use the good old pencil transfer trick. You’ll look at the values, do you want it dark or light, what information is important? Maybe you’ll get tired of sketching and just start carving, hoping to not regret that decision later. Also do not forget to flip the image, remember you’re making a stamp. You’re carving the outline of a person. You never met them. They are standing where you have been many times before, talking to people around them. Maybe they touched the same stones you did. Maybe they grew up here, maybe you were neighbours. In this moment, they’re alive.
