Bio

Elise Nordstad Kolby (b. 1995, Trondheim, Norway) is a designer, maker and collector. She has always had a fascination for things and making. She did a two-year material-based program with wood and metal at USN Notodden before enrolling in the BA and MA at KMD. Specialized in furniture and spatial design with a special interest for how our material surroundings affects us and what effect we, in turn, have on our surroundings. Appreciative of craftsmanship and tradition, but curious of new ways of doing and making. She also engages in more experimental projects and strives to be critical and curious about the state of things. Design can really be anything, but to her it is a way of understanding and engaging with the world.

PROJECT TITLE

The State of Things

The project deals with the state of the world through a study of our material surroundings. More specifically, through the paper cup. It speculates on the effects re-imagination and transformation could have on the way we perceive and relate to things, with the hope of creating discussions about how they make us act, how and why they are made, and what they mean. It is a critical reflection on consumption culture as well as being an ode to things. It is a story intertwined with many other stories, such as human evolution, anthropology, feminism, archeology, history, and philosophy.
