Monday Lectures at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen is pleased to invite you all to the public lecture “Plant Dyeing with Lichen, Moss and Snails” by architect and artist Ingeborg Katie Åtland.

The lecture expands on the artist’s exhibition “Two Quilts” at Galleri Kronborg, on view from September 1–14.

“Two Quilts” is inspired by the landscape of Rundemanen. Lichens, moss, and fungi were found in the area and used throughout different dyeing methods to color fabrics and textiles. In an apparent green landscape, lichens can be found that produce red and purple color tones. The exhibition “Two Quilts” presents a textile work dyed with knappskjold, hints of brunt fargelav and other color-samples of different plant materials.

The artist’s work with fabric dyeing was initiated in 2019 by a stay on the Lista peninsula in Southern Norway with the local Norwegian Folk Art and Craft Association. Since then, Åtland has continued to work with plant materials. For the work in the exhibition, Åtland has treated the fabrics with several repetitions of natural dye. Thereafter, the canvas was torn into squares and sewn back together to form a patchwork.

One quilt will be presented at Galleri Kronborg and the other one in the city center.
