Design in Context are delighted to present this presentation by Dutch designer Anja Groten: Designing Sideways: How unreliable publishing infrastructures and awkward work-arounds shape and bind together collectives of tool-makers and experimental publishers.

Anja Groten (DE) is a designer, researcher and educator based in Amsterdam. Groten's design practice revolves around the cross-section of digital and physical media, design and art education. Her research has been dealing with the collective entanglements of self-build tools and infrastructures as they evolve within self-organized groups such as Hackers & Designers and the Feminist Search Tools work group, both collectives that Groten is also part of.

Groten holds a degree in Communication Design from Niederrhein University of Applied Science, Krefeld (Diploma 2003-2008) and a Master degree in Design from Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam (MDes 2009-2011).

Since 2019 Groten heads the Design Master program of the Sandberg Instituut Amsterdam, Master of the Rietveld Academie. In November 2022 Groten completed a PhD about the relationship of design and collectivity at PhDArts, Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, Leiden University.
